Workplace Health and Safety
 

1.1 Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995

It is the responsibility of all staff to adhere to the provisions of the Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995. This is legislation dealing with workplace health and safety in Queensland. The Act sets out the health and safety obligations of people at work. The legal concept of 'Duty of Care' is central to the Act. It requires employers, workers and other people in the workplace to take adequate care to ensure healthy and safe work practices.

The Safety Committee for SASVRC is determined by the Director, and meets usually biennially. The Safety Committee usually consists of the SASVRC Safety Officer, the Centre Manager, the Technical Officer, the Radiation Safety Officer and a laboratory representative. The SASVRC Safety Committee performs the following functions:

  • Encouraging and maintaining at the workplace an active interest in workplace health and safety.
  • Considering measures for training and educating persons at the workplace about workplace health and safety issues.
  • Reviewing any breaches of safety at SASVRC and suggesting possible remedies to the problems.
  • Maintaining records of meetings including any recommendations made.
  • Acting as an advisory panel to the Director and the Advisory Committee, where appropriate.

1.3 Inspection procedures

An ongoing program to review safe operations and equipment is in the control of the Fire Safety and Security Department. They regularly check fire-fighting equipment, fire alarms and fire detectors.
The SASVRC Safety Committee is responsible for checking flammable and combustible liquid stores for proper containerisation and permissible volumes. Hazardous waste disposal is an integral part of the safety programs.
